– The Cambodia Expedition team: A cut above | 09/26/2011

We are thrilled to announce that nine individuals have joined the November 18-28 “Genocide in Perspective” Expedition to Cambodia and the Expedition is ready to go. Even by UBELONG standards this team stands out as incredibly accomplished and diverse. A few standout figures:

  • There are five UBELONG alumni, four from the January 2011 “Research Methods in International Development” Expedition to Peru and one who volunteered on the “marketing organic agriculture products” Immersion project in Laos in February 2011.
  • The team has members from seven nationalities: Algeria, Canada, France, Spain, Turkey, Vietnam and the United States.
  • Members have studied and worked on human rights issues in hotspots throughout the world, notably Bosnia, Rwanda and South Africa.
  • A variety of backgrounds are represented, including conflict resolution, disaster relief and reconstruction, economics, finance, human rights, infrastructure development and social science research.
  • Participants have consulted and/or worked at some of the most globally recognized organizations, including Citigroup, Nielsen, Inter-American Development Bank, United States Military, United Nations and World Bank.
  • Participants have studied and worked at universities throughout the world, including Cornell, Georgetown, George Mason, Johns Hopkins and the University of Texas, as well as Nilai University in Vietnam and Koç University in Turkey.
  • Participants speak a variety of languages, including Kinyarwanda.
  • There are cyclists, climbers, hikers, history buffs, sailors and, for when we reach Angkor Wat, a professional yoga instructor!
The nine individuals will be joining UBELONG Expedition Leaders and co-founders Raul Roman and Cedric Hodgeman to Cambodia to study the impact of the Khmer Rouge on all aspects of modern Cambodia, including civil society, economy, human rights and government. By meeting local stakeholders, visiting relevant sites throughout Phnom Penh and performing community service work, the team will gain deep firsthand insights into the issues. It will be a great opportunity to engage issues intellectually as part of an extremely talented, close-knit and supportive team.

If you would like to join the team we will accept up to two additional team members. The application deadline is October 10. Read more about the Expedition on the UBELONG site, see our recent news article about the benefits of joining and do not hesitate to contact  us if we can be of any help.
